Potluck Panic: A Tale of Last Minute Mac ‘N Cheese

Baptist churches are notorious for a few different things.  Some good. Some bad.  One thing that is distinctly Baptist is the potluck.  Those of you who have not experienced the Baptist phenomenon of a lunch consisting of fatty comfort foods and more desserts than you can ever imagine, will need to use a little bit of imagination to appreciate the conundrum that I found myself in on this particular Sunday morning. As a ministry wife, Sunday mornings have a few more moving pieces than your normal church going family.  We are normally the first ones at the church.  Instruments are put in place. Media for the service is set.…

Everything Under the Sun: Navigating the Seasons Of Life

When I was 11, my family moved from the metropolis of Lexington, Ky to rural Henry County. Only an hour and half separates the two, but I assumed, at that point, that we officially lived in the country. Compared to Lexington, the little town with no stop lights was the country. However it wasn’t until my husband and I recently moved to Bagdad, Ky (yes, you read that right) that I truly saw what living in the country looked like. Immediately, my favorite part of living in Bagdad was the picturesque scenery, the rolling farm lands. It amazed me that God made something that beautiful and let me live in…

The Yard Sale Dress: An Unapparent Treasure

“Playing dress up begins at age five and never truly ends” -Kate Spade This weekend, Brandon and I went to a yard sale that was raising money for an organization in Shelbyville that we are pretty involved with, where some ladies we’ve gotten to know really well were hosting. We stopped by, mainly to chat with them, but, of course, did a little shopping ourselves. We scored a few good finds, mainly for Ava. A couple of shirts, some Grinch pajama pants, and some tennis shoes. The shoes were a blessing-lightly worn Nike’s in her giant shoe size. Yes, the child is 10 and wears a size 9 shoe. I’ve been…

Jesus Loves Me: An Old Song With An Eternal Message

My husband text me a YouTube link to a song this week, insisting I listen to it. On my way home, I clicked on the link and it took me to a Gaither Vocal Band video. Not surprising. Brandon is a Southern Gospel junkie, always sharing songs with me in an effort to convert me. Not a ‘convert’ quite yet…. The song choice was simple. The quartet sang an artistic version of Jesus Loves Me, a very familiar tune. This time, I stopped and actually listened to the lyrics, struck for the first time by the depth of the simple, child-like lyrics. They spoke to this heart of mine that…

    Playing With Dolls

Hallie absolutely LOVES baby dolls- a stage I hope she stays in for at least a little while longer. I love watching her fill up an old purse of mine with used gift cards in one of my mom’s old wallets, a defunked cell phone, a mystery set of keys, and a checkbook cover and register. She feels so grown up wearing the purse and pushing the stroller and baby around the house. A friend of ours recently gave me a bag containing a couple of American Girl dolls, a bunk bed, and a handful of outfits. She knew the girls would enjoy them, but I think she had an…
